United Kingdom

One of the oldest and most prestigious locales for students of magical talent to acquire an education, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is located in the Highlands of Scotland.

Perhaps the most talked about or easily recognizable country in the United Kingdom, England is a hub for historians, scholars, businessmen and women, professionals, tourists...anyone, really! While the capital, London, is definitely a major point of interest and has plenty of landmarks, other interesting places include Stonehenge, the Cotswolds, and several historic castles scattered across the country.

The northernmost country of the UK, Scotland is a naturalist's dream. There are large cities - such as the capital, Edinburgh - or the famous port city, Glasgow -but a lot of the country remains undeveloped and untouched, preserving a wide variety of glistening green valleys and deep blue lakes. Scotland is a very integral part of the wizard community, boasting destinations such as Hogwarts and Hogsmeade.

A lot of people know Northern Ireland for its' emerald green golf courses, but it's so much more than that. With tons of history, grand castles, lush, rolling valleys and mountains, Northern Ireland provides not only lovely scenery for tourists to snap photos of, but a vast array of options of places to live, work, and relax.

West of England rests Wales, a country rich of history and culture - Celtic culture, in particular. With three of its' four sides surrounded by water, Wales is known for its' rugged coastline and has quite a few national parks highlighting these natural features.

Located on an island in the middle of the North Sea, Azkaban has been "home" to wizarding criminals since the 15th century. To serve a sentence in Azkaban is a frightening punishment, indeed. Guarded by Dementors, inmates face unyielding depression and despair while imprisoned at Azkaban, as any remaining glimmer of happiness or hope is often fed on by the sentient guards.

Europe

Located in the Pyrenees in Southern France, Beauxbatons Academy of Magic is thought to be one of the most beautiful and majestic of wizarding schools in the world. A beautiful chateau located in the middle of lush, emerald fields, blooming gardens, and magical, healing fountains sprung from the mountains that guard it, the palace is indeed an awe-inspiring sight for all who are lucky enough to see it for themselves.

Tucked away at the Northernmost tip of Norway (not that anyone can confirm this) rests Durmstrang Institute, a long-standing, quite proud wizarding school whose roots date back as far as 1294. The castle is small, standing at only four stories tall, and without any towers to overlook the grounds, which are quite expansive. Mountains surround and protect the fortress, and there are a sizeable number of lakes on the property, as well.

Northern Europe is considered to be comprised of the following countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Durmstrang is located within Northern Europe, though its' precise location is unplottable and remains a mystery.

Also known as Mediterranean Europe, this general geographical location includes the countries of Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, and Spain.

The largest combined region of Europe, Eastern Europe is made up of the following countries: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic,Estonia, Hungary, Kosovo, Lativia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. Parts of Russia and Turkey are sometimes also to be considered Eastern Europe. While there is no official wizarding school for this region, most students from these countries are invited to and attend either Beauxbatons or Durmstrang.

Western Europe contains some of the most recognizable and most frequently visited European countries on the map. It is made up of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, and Switzerland. Beauxbatons Academy of Magic is located in this region, in Southern France, to be precise.

North America

Located in Massachusetts, Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry services the entire continent of North America. What started as a stone house eventually grew into an entire campus to house its' growing population of students since the seventeeth century. Overlooking the grounds, which consist of lush, rolling hills, an always-happening courtyard, and a babbling brook that borders the forest, the castles' most notable features are the marble statues of the schools' founders, Isolt Sayre and James Steward stand on either side of the castles' entrance.

Colonized by European settlers beginning in the 16th century, the United States today is one of the world's most developed nations today. With 50 states covering 3.8 million square miles and over 324 million people, the United States is the worlds' third largest country in area, as well as third most populated country in the world. Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is located in the northeastern United States, specifically in Massachusetts, though the school accepts students from all over the continent of North America.

The United States' neighbor to the north, Canada is made up of ten provinces and three territories. With borders on both the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean, Canada also expands upwards into the Arctic Ocean, and is the world's fourth largest country in land area. Young witches and wizards from Canada attend Ilvermorny, which services all of North America.

Located South of the United States, Mexico is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to its' south and west, by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea to the southeast, and by the Gulf of Mexico at its' east. Densely populated, Mexico is the world's most populous Spanish-speaking country, the 13th largest independent nation in the world, and is made up of 31 states. Young wizards living in Mexico frequently attend Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to the north, in the United States.
